Die 4 Cs der Diamanten — Karat, Schliff, Farbe & Reinheit erklärt | The 4 Cs of Diamonds — Carat, Cut, Colour & Clarity Explained

D–F: farblos
G–J: nahezu farblos
K–M: leicht getönt
N–R: sehr hell getönt
S–Z: hell getönt
Merksatz: Je näher an D, desto farbloser.

4. Reinheit — die Merkmale im Stein

Clarity beschreibt die Reinheit eines Diamanten.
Bewertet werden innere Einschlüsse und äußere Merkmale.
Skala: FL, IF, VVS1/VVS2, VS1/VS2, SI1/SI2, I1/I2/I3.

English version

What do the 4Cs mean for diamonds? Carat, cut, colour and clarity describe four key quality characteristics. This guide helps you compare natural diamonds and choose a suitable stone for your engagement ring.

1. Carat — the weight

Carat describes the weight of a diamond.
• 1 carat = 0.2 grams.
• The higher the carat weight, the rarer and generally more valuable the diamond.
• Carat describes weight – not size.
Key point: Carat = weight, not size.

2. Cut — the light performance

Cut describes how precisely a diamond has been cut.
An excellent cut reflects light optimally and delivers maximum brilliance.
GIA grades the overall cut of standard round brilliant diamonds as Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair or Poor. Other diamond shapes are not assessed using the same GIA overall cut scale.
Key point: A good cut makes the diamond come alive.

3. Colour — the colour grade

Colour describes how colourless a white diamond is.
The scale ranges from D (colourless) to Z (noticeably tinted).
D–F: colourless
G–J: near-colourless
K–M: faint tint
N–R: very light tint
S–Z: light tint
Key point: The closer to D, the more colourless. Price also depends on cut, clarity and carat weight.

4. Clarity — the characteristics within the stone

Clarity describes the purity of a diamond.
Both internal inclusions and external blemishes are assessed.
Scale: FL, IF, VVS1/VVS2, VS1/VS2, SI1/SI2, I1/I2/I3.
Clarity grading considers factors including the size, number, location and nature of characteristics. Value depends on the combination of all 4Cs.
Key point: Fewer inclusions mean higher clarity.

Our Recommendation

Consider the 4Cs together. More carat weight alone does not make a diamond the better choice. Compare its light performance, visible colour and clarity, and independent grading report to find a stone that suits your preferences and budget.
